Acetone smoothing: which material it works on
Acetone smoothing is a finish in which acetone vapour slightly dissolves the surface of the plastic so the layers melt into a smooth, glossy skin. It works on ABS and ASA, not on PLA or PETG.

How the technique works
The print is exposed to acetone vapour in a closed container. The surface softens and levels out. Once dry it is smooth and glossy and the layers are gone. It is mainly ABS that is treated this way. ASA reacts similarly.
It dissolves the surface rather than coating it, so material is lost and small details are rounded off. Acetone is flammable and its vapour is harmful to health, so you work outdoors or in a ventilated space and away from any source of fire.
Why it does not work on PLA and PETG
Acetone practically does not dissolve PLA or PETG. The surface does not smooth out, at most it turns matt or softens. Other solvents work on PLA, but they are toxic and laborious, so we do not normally recommend them. And we do not print ABS or ASA.
If you need a part that resists UV or higher temperatures, email us at jakub.novak@boostello.com with what exactly you need, and we will advise what to do. We do not promise ASA or ABS printing though.
How to get a smooth surface on PLA or PETG
What this means for your order
An order with us is in PLA or PETG with visible layers. If you want a fine surface, you do the finishing yourself after delivery, we do not offer these finishes. The price and lead time are calculated from the print only.
If what you want is a smooth look and not a specific material, try the combination of sanding, filler and primer. It is more work, but the result on both PLA and PETG tends to be good. If a smooth surface is a condition of your project, write to us before ordering.
Common questions
Can PLA be smoothed with acetone?
No. Acetone does not dissolve PLA, so the surface does not smooth out. Other methods work on PLA, sanding and coating.
Does acetone work on PETG?
No, PETG resists acetone. A smooth surface can be achieved by sanding and an epoxy coat.
Do you print in ABS so it can be smoothed?
No, we print only PLA and PETG. Acetone smoothing needs ABS or ASA.
Related terms
ABS
ABS (acrylonitrile butadiene styrene) is a strong, tough engineering plastic that LEGO bricks are made from. In 3D printing it warps easily and gives off fumes, so it needs an enclosed printer.
ASA
ASA (acrylonitrile styrene acrylate) is an engineering plastic for 3D printing that withstands UV radiation, rain and heat well. It is used mainly for parts that have to last a long time outdoors.
Sanding prints
Sanding is wearing down the surface of a print by hand or machine with sandpaper to reduce visible layers. It is the first step if you want to paint a part or have it smooth to the touch.
Epoxy coating
An epoxy coating is a thin layer of two-part epoxy resin applied to the surface of a print. It floods the layers, cures to a hard glossy finish and usually stiffens the part.
PETG
PETG is a tough 3D printing plastic, a close relative of the material in PET bottles. Compared with PLA it withstands more heat, impact and moisture, so it suits technical parts and outdoor use.
PLA
PLA (polylactic acid) is the most common 3D printing material, made from plant starch. It is cheap, accurate and easy to print, but it does not withstand heat above about 60 °C or long exposure to sun.
