Chamfers: a clean bottom edge without supports
A chamfer is a straight angled cut instead of a sharp edge, usually at 45 degrees. In 3D printing it prints cleanly even on the bottom edge.

What a chamfer is
A chamfer is a bevelled edge made by cutting off a corner with a flat face. It differs from a fillet in that the transition is not an arc but a straight sloping surface.
A chamfer is used to remove sharp edges, to make parts go together more easily and to simplify printing. For these reasons it is often more practical than a fillet in 3D printing.
Why it suits the bottom edge
If the bottom edge of a model is rounded, the base is an arc and the plastic sags on it. With a 45 degree chamfer each layer is shifted a little, but it sits firmly on the one below, so no support is needed and the edge comes out sharp.
A chamfer on the bottom edge also hides elephant foot, the slight widening of the first layer caused by nozzle pressure and bed heat.
Where else a chamfer helps
- Holes. A chamfered rim helps when inserting a screw or pin and hides small imperfections.
- Horizontal overhangs. A 45 degree slope turns an overhang into a self-supporting shape.
- Sharp edges. A chamfer of 0.5 to 1 mm takes off edges that catch on clothing.
What chamfer to design
With a 0.4 mm nozzle a chamfer of at least 0.6 to 1 mm makes sense, smaller ones get lost in the layers. On the bottom of a model, 1 to 2 mm is fine. Keep the angle around 45 degrees, with a steeper angle the supports come back.
When you export from a CAD program to STL or 3MF, a chamfer survives without any problem, because it is a flat surface.
Common questions
Is a chamfer better than a fillet?
On the bottom edge, yes, it prints without supports. A fillet is better for inside corners, where it spreads the stress.
What chamfer angle should I choose?
Around 45 degrees. Steeper will not come out clean without supports.
Will a chamfer change the dimensions?
It removes a little material from the edge. If the part has to fit, check the dimensions after chamfering.
Related terms
Fillet
A fillet is a smooth rounded transition instead of a sharp edge or corner. It reduces stress concentration, so a printed part cracks less.
Overhang
An overhang is a part of the model that sticks out over empty space with nothing underneath it. In FDM printing, only up to a certain angle can be printed without supports.
Elephant foot
Elephant foot is a 3D printing flaw where the first layers spread outwards, so the bottom of the part is wider than the rest and looks like an elephant's foot.
Supports
Supports are auxiliary columns of material that hold up the overhanging parts of a part in 3D printing. They are removed after printing, but they add material, time and marks on the surface.
CAD
CAD is computer-aided design, that is software for creating precise 2D and 3D models. A model from CAD is exported to STL or 3MF and sent to print.
Model orientation
Model orientation is the position in which a part lies on the build plate. In FDM printing it decides the strength, the surface finish, the amount of supports and the print time.
