Hollow models: when they make sense and when infill is enough
A hollow model has a closed cavity inside instead of a solid volume. In FDM printing, infill takes care of the inside, so hollowing by hand is usually not needed.

Why a cavity is made
In resin printing a part is hollowed to save expensive resin and reduce stress. With FDM you do not need to. The slicer makes the outer walls and fills the inside with a sparse pattern set by the infill percentage. In practice it is the same cavity, only with a lattice that holds the walls up.
So you can upload a solid model as it is and choose the strength in the calculator.
Our strength settings
- Light, 10% infill: the least material, suited to decorations and light objects.
- Standard, 15% infill: ordinary objects, boxes, holders.
- Strong, 40% infill: parts that carry a load, such as handles and levers.
When a cavity is worse
If you hollow out the inside yourself and leave thin walls, you get a hollow part without infill, whose strength depends only on the wall thickness. With a thin wall under 1 mm it is fragile. A closed cavity without an opening is fine for FDM, since the printer bridges it. But if the roof of the cavity is wide, it needs supports, and they cannot get out of a closed cavity, so they stay inside.
The drain holes for letting out uncured resin that you know from SLA are not needed here. We do not print resin.
A common mistake is to hollow the model yourself and leave the walls thin. You end up with a part whose strength depends only on the wall thickness, and with a wall under 1 mm it is fragile. If you want to save material, choose light strength rather than trying your own cavity.
What to do when ordering
Send the model solid, as it is. If you want to save material, choose light strength with 10% infill. If you want a hollowed shape for a function, such as a container, look at wall thickness and check it is strong enough. Common questions
Do I need to hollow a model for FDM printing?
No. The infill takes care of the inside, and you choose it with the strength setting. Hollowing by hand usually improves nothing.
Does a hollow model save material?
Yes, but 10% infill does almost the same without extra work. If you hollow it yourself, watch the wall thickness.
Can the cavity be closed?
In FDM, yes, but supports inside would stay trapped. So the roof of the cavity must not be too wide.

Infill
Infill is the sparse lattice that fills the inside of a part in 3D printing. It is given as a percentage, and the higher it is, the stronger, heavier and dearer the part.
Wall thickness
Wall thickness is the distance between the outer and inner surface of a part. In 3D printing it decides the strength and whether a thin detail prints at all.
Supports
Supports are auxiliary columns of material that hold up the overhanging parts of a part in 3D printing. They are removed after printing, but they add material, time and marks on the surface.
Resin
Resin is a liquid photopolymer that cures under UV light. It is used in SLA, DLP and MSLA printers and gives very fine detail, but the parts are brittle.
SLA
SLA is a 3D printing technology where liquid resin is cured by light layer by layer. It handles very fine detail and a smooth surface, but parts are more brittle than FDM ones.
3D printing price
The price of 3D printing is the sum of the value of the material, printer time and the work around the order. In FDM printing, print time matters most, not the material itself.
