Wipe tower: why multicolour printing costs more
A wipe tower (also called a prime tower) is a helper column next to your part where the nozzle flushes out leftover plastic from the previous colour at each colour change. It is thrown away after printing.

Why the tower exists
When the colour changes, there is still some of the previous plastic in the nozzle. To stop the colours mixing in your part, the nozzle pushes out a bit of plastic to the side, onto the tower, before it returns to the model. The tower is built layer by layer up to the height of the tallest part, so it grows together with it. The details are on the OrcaSlicer wiki.
This works with automatic filament changes, which our filament changer does for up to 4 colours.
What the tower costs
How to bring the price down
The price rises with the number of colour changes. It helps to use fewer colours, keep colour areas joined together instead of alternating on every layer, and assign colours so they do not have to change often. Send a 3MF with colours assigned to the parts of the model. You will find more in the entry on multicolour printing.
The tower and parts on the bed. The tower is printed once for the whole bed, not separately for each part. When you print many small parts at once, its cost is split between them, so each one comes out cheaper than a single part would. That is why multicolour batches pay off more than one-offs. The tower still takes up space, so a few fewer parts may fit.
The tower on your order
For a multicolour model we add the wipe tower automatically. Its plastic and time are already included in the price per part and in the lead time you see in the calculator. A single-colour part does not need one.
Common questions
Can the wipe tower be left out?
Not with automatic colour changes, because without it the colours would mix on your part. It can only be made smaller by reducing the number of colours or colour changes.
Why is a small figurine in 4 colours so expensive?
The plastic for the tower and purging can exceed the plastic in the figurine itself. Time is added for every colour change as well.
Will the tower stay attached to my part?
No. The tower is a separate column next to the part, and you do not receive it.

Purge on colour change
Purge is the extra plastic the nozzle pushes out at a colour change to clear out what is left of the previous colour. It never goes into your part and is thrown away after printing.
Multicolour printing
Multicolour printing is 3D printing in which the printer swaps between several filaments and prints one part in several colours at once, with no gluing or painting.
Filament changer
A filament changer is a device that automatically swaps filament spools during a print. It lets a single part be printed in several colours with no one stepping in.
3MF
3MF is a 3D printing file format that carries units, colours, materials and several parts as well as the shape of the model. It succeeds STL and is the best choice for multicolour printing.
Full bed
A full bed is when as many pieces of one model as possible fit on the print plate and the printer prints them all at once. The price per piece is then at its lowest.
3D printing price
The price of 3D printing is the sum of the value of the material, printer time and the work around the order. In FDM printing, print time matters most, not the material itself.
