Digital sculpting: modelling figurines and organic shapes
Digital sculpting is shaping a 3D model much like clay. It suits characters, animals and organic shapes that would be hard to draw in CAD.

What digital sculpting is
In digital sculpting you treat the model like clay: you push, pull and smooth it. The best known programs are Blender and ZBrush.
Unlike CAD, it is not about exact dimensions but about shape. The result is a very fine polygon mesh with millions of triangles.
What to watch for when printing
- Thin details. Horns, hair or fingers thinner than about 0.8 mm do not print or they snap off. See smallest feature.
- Watertightness. Sculpted models often have holes and overlapping parts. See manifold model.
- Overhangs. Outstretched arms or heads need supports.
- File size. With a dense mesh the file can exceed 50 MB, in which case reduce it.
Preparing the model
Before export, reduce the mesh, for example with the Decimate command in Blender, and merge all parts into a single body. Check the thickness of the thinnest parts and add a base for the model to stand on. For a figure standing on narrow legs, a base larger than the feet is worth it.
Price and colours
Figurines with overhangs need supports, which are included in the price per piece automatically. If you want several colours, send a 3MF with colours assigned, see multicolour printing. Colour changes add a purge tower and time, so the print costs more.
Common questions
Is digital sculpting suitable for 3D printing?
Yes, but you need to check thin parts, cavities and file size. The model has to be watertight.
Which program should I choose?
Blender is free and handles both sculpting and print preparation. ZBrush is paid and used for detailed figurines.
Why does my upload take so long?
A dense mesh makes a big file. Reduce the number of triangles, the print will be the same.
Related terms
CAD
CAD is computer-aided design, that is software for creating precise 2D and 3D models. A model from CAD is exported to STL or 3MF and sent to print.
Polygon mesh
A polygon mesh is the surface of a 3D model made up of a large number of small faces, most often triangles. The printer reads the shape of the model from it.
Manifold (watertight model)
A manifold model is a 3D model whose surface has no holes or overlapping faces, so it is clear what is inside and what is outside.
Blender
Blender is a free, open source program for 3D modelling, sculpting and animation. For 3D printing it suits mainly organic shapes, characters and edits to downloaded models.
Smallest feature
The smallest feature is the smallest element that still prints cleanly in 3D printing. For FDM with a 0.4 mm nozzle it is about 0.8 mm in width and 0.2 mm in height.
Multicolour printing
Multicolour printing is 3D printing in which the printer swaps between several filaments and prints one part in several colours at once, with no gluing or painting.
