Manifold models: why a model must have no holes
A manifold model is a 3D model whose surface has no holes or overlapping faces, so it is clear what is inside and what is outside.

What manifold means
Imagine the model as a watertight container. If the surface has a hole, the water would run out, and the printer cannot tell where the inside is. In a manifold model every edge is shared by exactly two faces and there are no gaps, which is why it is also called watertight.
Technically such a model is a solid and its surface is a closed polygon mesh.
Which errors appear
- Holes. Missing triangles in the surface, often after an export or after merging models.
- Edges with three faces. So-called non-manifold edges, where three or more faces meet.
- Flipped faces. The normal points inwards, so inside and outside are swapped.
- Self-intersection. Two parts pass through each other without being joined.
Why this matters for printing
The slicer cuts the model into layers and at each one it has to know where there is plastic and where there is empty space. With a faulty mesh you get holes in the walls, missing faces or a print with a strange interior.
With models from CAD errors are rare. They show up most often with downloaded models, sculpted models and when several bodies are combined.
What we do
After you upload, we repair small holes in the mesh automatically. For bigger errors that would change the shape, we will write to you. See model repair.
If you check the model yourself before uploading, you save time. A check in Blender, or in the slicer when you open the file, will do.
Common questions
What is a non-manifold model?
A model with holes in the surface, edges with the wrong number of faces or self-intersection. The slicer cannot work out its inside.
Will you fix my model?
We repair small holes automatically. For bigger errors we will write to you about what needs changing.
How do I know if my model is manifold?
Check it in a slicer or in Blender. The slicer usually warns about errors when you open the file.

Polygon mesh
A polygon mesh is the surface of a 3D model made up of a large number of small faces, most often triangles. The printer reads the shape of the model from it.
Model repair
Model repair means editing a polygon mesh to close holes, fix flipped faces and remove self-intersections, so the model can be printed.
STL
STL is the most common file format for 3D printing. It describes only the surface of a model as a mesh of triangles, with no colours, material or units.
Blender
Blender is a free, open source program for 3D modelling, sculpting and animation. For 3D printing it suits mainly organic shapes, characters and edits to downloaded models.
Slicer
A slicer is a program that cuts a 3D model into thin layers and works out the nozzle path for each one. The result is G-code for the printer and exact figures for material use and print time.
CAD
CAD is computer-aided design, that is software for creating precise 2D and 3D models. A model from CAD is exported to STL or 3MF and sent to print.
