FreeCAD: free parametric CAD for 3D printing
FreeCAD is a free, open source parametric CAD program. It suits precise mechanical parts that you want to edit later by changing dimensions.

What FreeCAD offers
FreeCAD is open source CAD with no fees and no restrictions on commercial use. It is parametric, so changing one dimension recalculates the model. It has workbenches for sketches, solids, assemblies and drawings. You will find more on Wikipedia.
It is stricter and slower to learn than commercial programs. In return you get a program that nobody can switch off or make more expensive.
Exporting from FreeCAD
Select the body and via File, Export choose STL, 3MF or STEP. For STL you set the accuracy on export, that is the mesh deviation. For round shapes use a lower value, otherwise the print will be visibly faceted.
Common mistakes
- Several bodies in one file. Export only what you want printed, otherwise everything gets printed.
- A mesh that is too coarse. Cylinders look like polygons because the export had a large tolerance.
- Thin walls. Walls under 0.8 mm may not come out cleanly.
FreeCAD and your order
FreeCAD is chosen by people who want full parametric CAD without licence restrictions, or who want certainty that their files can still be opened in ten years. It suits boxes, holders, gear parts and spare parts with set dimensions. With large assemblies it tends to be slower than commercial programs. For very organic shapes reach for Blender instead.
You upload the exported file to the calculator. After upload you see the model, its dimensions and a price based on the actual material use and time. If the part belongs to an assembly, think about the tolerances and the direction it will be printed in, because strength depends on it. There is more in the entry on model orientation.
Common questions
Is FreeCAD really free?
Yes, it is open source with no fees, including for commercial use.
Why is my cylinder from FreeCAD faceted?
The mesh deviation is set too large on STL export. Lower it and export again.
Do you accept an FCStd file directly?
No, we accept STL, 3MF, OBJ and STEP. FCStd has to be exported.

STL
STL is the most common file format for 3D printing. It describes only the surface of a model as a mesh of triangles, with no colours, material or units.
3MF
3MF is a 3D printing file format that carries units, colours, materials and several parts as well as the shape of the model. It succeeds STL and is the best choice for multicolour printing.
STEP
STEP is the standard format for exchanging 3D models between CAD programs, defined by ISO 10303. Unlike STL it describes exact geometry with curves and surfaces, not a mesh of triangles.
CAD
CAD is computer-aided design, that is software for creating precise 2D and 3D models. A model from CAD is exported to STL or 3MF and sent to print.
Parametric modelling
Parametric modelling is a way of designing where the shape is defined by dimensions and rules, so you change it by editing a number instead of redrawing.
Tolerances
Tolerances in 3D printing set how far a printed dimension may differ from the model and how much clearance to leave between parts that are meant to fit together.
