STEP file: what it is and how to get it printed
STEP is the standard format for exchanging 3D models between CAD programs, defined by ISO 10303. Unlike STL it describes exact geometry with curves and surfaces, not a mesh of triangles.

What is inside a STEP file
STEP comes from the international standard ISO 10303, and the file itself, with the extension .step or .stp, is described in its part 21. It is used by computer-aided design (CAD) programs such as Fusion, SolidWorks, Inventor or FreeCAD.
A STEP file contains no triangles, but real surfaces, curves and holes with exact dimensions. A cylinder in it really is a cylinder, not a polygon. The units are written into the file, so the model never uploads at the wrong scale. The Library of Congress also has a description of the format.
When to send STEP
STEP is a good choice for technical parts you drew yourself: brackets, housings, jigs or spare parts. There is nothing to export to another format, you just send what your CAD program saves.
For printing, every model ends up converted to a mesh of triangles. With STEP we do that when we prepare it for printing, so curves come out smooth. If you want a part in several colours, send a 3MF instead, because STEP does not carry colours for printing.
What to watch out for with STEP
- Send the one part or assembly you want printed. If the file holds a whole assembly of 20 parts, we will print all of them. Hide or delete the parts you do not want before exporting.
- Print accuracy is not CAD accuracy. The nozzle is 0.4 mm and the layer 0.2 mm. For holes and joints that have to fit together, leave some clearance, and read more in the tolerances entry.
- Size. One part can be at most 246 × 246 × 256 mm, and the file up to 50 MB.
Common questions
What is the difference between STEP and STL?
STEP carries the exact geometry from a CAD program, units included. STL is just a mesh of triangles with no units. We accept both for printing.
Is .stp the same as .step?
Yes, it is the same format with a shorter extension. We accept both.
Can you edit a STEP model?
We print the model as you send it. You can change the scale right in the calculator, but any other changes have to be made in your CAD program before uploading.
Related terms
STL
STL is the most common file format for 3D printing. It describes only the surface of a model as a mesh of triangles, with no colours, material or units.
3MF
3MF is a 3D printing file format that carries units, colours, materials and several parts as well as the shape of the model. It succeeds STL and is the best choice for multicolour printing.
Tolerances
Tolerances in 3D printing set how far a printed dimension may differ from the model and how much clearance to leave between parts that are meant to fit together.
OBJ
OBJ is an open 3D model format that describes the surface as a mesh of polygons and can refer to materials and textures. Graphics programs and 3D scanners commonly export it.
Slicer
A slicer is a program that cuts a 3D model into thin layers and works out the nozzle path for each one. The result is G-code for the printer and exact figures for material use and print time.
