Heat creep: when filament softens where it should not
Heat creep is a phenomenon in FDM printing where heat from the hotend travels up into the cold section and the filament softens too early. The plastic then jams and printing stops.

How heat creep works
A hotend has two parts: a hot one at the bottom, where the plastic melts, and a cold one at the top, where the filament is still solid and being pushed down. Between them is a narrow spot with little heat transfer that separates them.
If heat gets above that spot, the filament softens earlier than it should. It swells and jams in the feed tube. The extruder can no longer move it and the print stops, even though the nozzle itself is not clogged. That is why it often only shows after a longer print, not right at the start.
Why it happens
- Weak hotend cooling. The heatsink fan is not enough or is clogged with dust.
- A warm chamber. In an enclosure the air is warmer and heat is carried away less well.
- Long retraction. With every pull-back molten plastic gets higher into the cold zone.
- Slow printing with a low flow rate. At a slow pace the filament sits longer in the heated tube.
What this means for an order
For you this is more information than a task. We maintain the printers, and heat creep cannot be caused by the model or by a setting in the calculator.
It is connected to the fact that PLA in an enclosure needs good hotend cooling, or it softens too early.
How it is fixed
If you have your own printer, it helps to clean the heatsink fan, open the door, shorten the retraction or lower the temperature. We only explain here, we do not sell spare parts and we do not repair other people's printers.
You see the lead time in the calculator straight away. It is worked out from the printers' capacity.
Common questions
What is heat creep in simple terms?
Heat from the hotend rises to where it should still be cool, and the filament softens too early. It jams in the tube and the extruder cannot push it.
Is it the same as a clogged nozzle?
No. With a clogged nozzle the plastic jams in the nozzle itself, and with heat creep higher up in the cold section. The symptoms are similar, but the cause and the fix differ.
Can heat creep ruin my order?
It is a production risk that we monitor and you do not need to handle. The calculator shows you the lead time straight away, based on printer capacity.
Related terms
Hotend
The hotend is the hot part of a 3D printer's print head where filament is melted and from where it goes to the nozzle. It consists of a heater, a temperature sensor, a heatsink and the nozzle.
Clogged nozzle
A clogged nozzle is a state where no plastic, or only a little, passes through a 3D printer's nozzle, so the print breaks off or under-extrusion occurs.
Cooling
Cooling in 3D printing is a stream of air from the fans on the print head that quickly sets freshly laid plastic. It improves overhangs and detail, but too much of it weakens the bond between layers.
Enclosure
An enclosure is a cover around the build area of a 3D printer that keeps the temperature steady and protects the print from draughts. It matters for materials that shrink a lot as they cool, such as ABS and ASA.
Nozzle temperature
Nozzle temperature is the temperature the hotend is heated to so the filament melts. It decides how fluid the plastic is, how strong the bonds between layers are and how the surface looks.
Retraction
Retraction is a brief pull of the filament back out of the nozzle before it moves to another place. It reduces pressure in the nozzle, so no plastic leaks out during the move.
