Clogged nozzle: symptoms, causes and effect on printing
A clogged nozzle is a state where no plastic, or only a little, passes through a 3D printer's nozzle, so the print breaks off or under-extrusion occurs.

How a clog shows
With a complete clog, the printer pulls filament but nothing comes out, and the print starts to be laid down with empty layers. A partial clog shows earlier as under-extrusion: lines are thin, the printer clicks and the extruder skips.
In FDM the plastic is pushed through a very narrow opening, for example 0.4 mm, so even a small bit of dirt can block it.
Why a nozzle clogs
- Dirt and dust in the filament.
- Leftovers of a previous material with a different temperature.
- Damp filament that bubbles and carbonises, see filament moisture.
- Filament softening too high up in the hotend, see heat creep.
- A wrongly chosen temperature or an abrasive material that wears the nozzle, see hardened nozzle.
Another cause is often poor-quality or badly stored filament. A spool that is dusty or has an uneven diameter clogs the nozzle more often, see filament diameter.
How it is fixed
The easiest way is to clear the nozzle with cleaning filament at a higher temperature, or to poke it through mechanically with a thin needle. If that does not help, the nozzle has to be replaced, see nozzle and hotend. We do the printer maintenance.
For your order
If a nozzle clogs during printing, the part fails and has to be printed again, which can push back the lead time. We do not promise absolute freedom from faults. We photograph every batch before dispatch.
Common questions
Can a clog ruin a print?
Yes, if it happens in the middle of a print, the part is left unfinished or with missing layers.
Is a clogged nozzle the same as heat creep?
No. Heat creep is one cause of clogging, not the state itself.
Is a clog fixed by replacing the nozzle?
Often yes, if cleaning does not help. A new nozzle is cheap, but it has to be fitted correctly.
Related terms
Under-extrusion
Under-extrusion is a 3D printing flaw where less plastic comes out of the nozzle than the slicer calculated, so lines are thin and gappy and the part is weaker.
Heat creep
Heat creep is a phenomenon in FDM printing where heat from the hotend travels up into the cold section and the filament softens too early. The plastic then jams and printing stops.
Nozzle
The nozzle is the replaceable metal tip of a 3D printer's print head that molten filament comes out of. Its diameter sets the width of the printed line, and with it the detail and the print speed.
Hotend
The hotend is the hot part of a 3D printer's print head where filament is melted and from where it goes to the nozzle. It consists of a heater, a temperature sensor, a heatsink and the nozzle.
Filament moisture
Filament moisture is water the plastic absorbs from the air. When it is heated in the nozzle it turns to steam and the print is spoiled.
Hardened nozzle
A hardened nozzle is a 3D printer nozzle made of hardened metal that does not wear out as quickly on abrasive filaments, such as those with carbon or glass fibres.
