Model repair: how holes and mesh errors are dealt with
Model repair means editing a polygon mesh to close holes, fix flipped faces and remove self-intersections, so the model can be printed.

Why a model needs repairing
A model without holes and without self-intersection prints without problems. Such models are called manifold. Many downloaded, scanned or sculpted models do have errors though, even if they look fine in a viewer.
Errors appear during export, when bodies are merged, during scanning or when converting between formats.
What we repair
After you upload, the slicer on our server prepares the model for printing. Small holes in the mesh are repaired automatically in the process. If the error is bigger, for example a whole face is missing or the model was merged badly, we will write to you.
The repair is done by an automatic tool that closes smaller holes. It does not change the shape of the model and cannot guess what you meant. So it is not a substitute for a clean model.
How to repair it yourself
- Slicer on opening. Several slicers, such as PrusaSlicer, repair small errors automatically when they load a file.
- Blender. An add-on for checking models for 3D printing shows holes and non-manifold edges, see Blender.
- Windows 3D Builder. Offers to repair a file when you open it.
- The original CAD. It is best to fix the error where it arose and export again.
How to prevent errors
Export a single closed solid from CAD to 3MF or STL, not several overlapping ones. When merging bodies, use a boolean union, do not just push them into each other.
If you downloaded a model, open it in a slicer. It often reveals an error that you cannot see in a viewer.
Common questions
Will you repair my model for me?
We repair small holes automatically. Bigger errors would change the shape, so we will write to you about what is wrong.
How do I find out my model has errors?
The slicer usually warns you or repairs the error when you open the file. A check in Blender also helps.
Does repairing change the dimensions?
Automatic closing of small holes changes the shape only slightly, and only at the hole. The overall dimensions stay the same.

Manifold (watertight model)
A manifold model is a 3D model whose surface has no holes or overlapping faces, so it is clear what is inside and what is outside.
Polygon mesh
A polygon mesh is the surface of a 3D model made up of a large number of small faces, most often triangles. The printer reads the shape of the model from it.
STL
STL is the most common file format for 3D printing. It describes only the surface of a model as a mesh of triangles, with no colours, material or units.
Blender
Blender is a free, open source program for 3D modelling, sculpting and animation. For 3D printing it suits mainly organic shapes, characters and edits to downloaded models.
Slicer
A slicer is a program that cuts a 3D model into thin layers and works out the nozzle path for each one. The result is G-code for the printer and exact figures for material use and print time.
3D scanning
3D scanning is capturing the shape of a real object as a digital 3D model. After clean-up, that model can be printed as a copy or used as a base for your own design.
