OBJ file: what it is and how to print it
OBJ is an open 3D model format that describes the surface as a mesh of polygons and can refer to materials and textures. Graphics programs and 3D scanners commonly export it.

What is inside an OBJ file
The OBJ format was developed in the 1980s by Wavefront Technologies for its animation software. It is a readable text file of the points and faces that make up the surface of a model, in other words a polygon mesh.
An OBJ often comes with an .mtl file of materials and images with textures. These are used to show colour in graphics and games. Like STL, OBJ does not store units. The Library of Congress also has a description of the format.
When to send OBJ
OBJ is fine when the model was made in Blender or ZBrush, or comes from a 3D scan. You upload it just like an STL, pick a material and strength, and see the price straight away.
We do not use the textures and colours from the .mtl file for printing, we print the shape. If you want a part in several colours, save it as a 3MF and assign colours to the individual parts of the model.
What to watch out for with OBJ
- Units. Blender works in metres, so your model may arrive a thousand times too small. You can fix it with the scale in the calculator.
- A closed shape. Models from graphics software are often just surfaces with no thickness, such as thin leaves or hair. The printer needs a closed solid with a wall of at least about 1 mm. We repair small holes in the mesh automatically.
- Large scans. We accept a scan with millions of faces up to 50 MB. If it is bigger, simplify the mesh. With a 0.4 mm nozzle you will not see the difference in the print.
Common questions
Can you print an OBJ in colour?
No, we do not use the colours and textures from an OBJ for printing. For multicolour printing, send a 3MF with colours assigned, up to 4 colours per part.
Do I have to send the .mtl file too?
No. The OBJ alone is enough for printing, and we do not need the .mtl or the textures.
Why is my OBJ tiny after uploading?
It was saved in metres, for example from Blender. Set the scale in the calculator and the model will be the right size.

STL
STL is the most common file format for 3D printing. It describes only the surface of a model as a mesh of triangles, with no colours, material or units.
3MF
3MF is a 3D printing file format that carries units, colours, materials and several parts as well as the shape of the model. It succeeds STL and is the best choice for multicolour printing.
STEP
STEP is the standard format for exchanging 3D models between CAD programs, defined by ISO 10303. Unlike STL it describes exact geometry with curves and surfaces, not a mesh of triangles.
Multicolour printing
Multicolour printing is 3D printing in which the printer swaps between several filaments and prints one part in several colours at once, with no gluing or painting.
Slicer
A slicer is a program that cuts a 3D model into thin layers and works out the nozzle path for each one. The result is G-code for the printer and exact figures for material use and print time.
