Onshape: CAD in your browser and exporting for 3D printing
Onshape is parametric CAD that runs entirely in your browser, with no installation. Models are stored in the cloud and can be shared and edited together.
No model? No problem, pick a ready one
These sites have thousands of free models. Download an STL or 3MF and upload it here. If you sell it or use it for business, check the model licence. How to pick a model and licence
How Onshape works
Onshape belongs to PTC and works on any computer with a browser. It is full parametric CAD with sketches, solids and assemblies. A fuller description is on Wikipedia.
The free plan is for non-commercial use and the documents in it are public, so anyone can see them. If you are designing a part for a customer, you should use a paid plan. The current terms are set by Onshape.
Exporting for print
Right-click the Part Studio tab, choose Export and select STL, 3MF or STEP. For STL check the units, the default is millimetres. You can set STL to binary, which is smaller.
If a part belongs to an assembly, export each part separately, not the whole assembly at once.
Design the part so it prints well
Round or chamfer edges at the bed so the first layer has a good surface. For parts that fit together, leave a gap. More about it is in the entry on tolerances. You can also draw a fillet instead of a sharp corner, which improves strength.
Onshape and your order
A big advantage of Onshape is the version history and the ability to work together in the same document at once, without emailing files. If a designer sends you a link, you can open the model, measure it and export it yourself. For made-to-order printing that is useful when dimensions need tuning: the change shows up across the whole document and you export a new version in a minute.
You upload the finished file to the calculator. The model is genuinely prepared for printing with us, so the price per piece and the lead time come from real grams and time. If you need several pieces, you will also see how many fit on the bed at once.
Common questions
Is Onshape free?
There is a free plan, but only for non-commercial use and with public documents. The terms are set by Onshape.
What format should I send from Onshape?
STL for one colour, 3MF with colours assigned for several. We accept STEP too.
Does Onshape work on mobile?
It has an app for phone and tablet, but exporting for print is more comfortable on a computer.
Related terms
STL
STL is the most common file format for 3D printing. It describes only the surface of a model as a mesh of triangles, with no colours, material or units.
3MF
3MF is a 3D printing file format that carries units, colours, materials and several parts as well as the shape of the model. It succeeds STL and is the best choice for multicolour printing.
STEP
STEP is the standard format for exchanging 3D models between CAD programs, defined by ISO 10303. Unlike STL it describes exact geometry with curves and surfaces, not a mesh of triangles.
CAD
CAD is computer-aided design, that is software for creating precise 2D and 3D models. A model from CAD is exported to STL or 3MF and sent to print.
Parametric modelling
Parametric modelling is a way of designing where the shape is defined by dimensions and rules, so you change it by editing a number instead of redrawing.
Fillet
A fillet is a smooth rounded transition instead of a sharp edge or corner. It reduces stress concentration, so a printed part cracks less.
