Model scale: how to change the size before printing
Model scale is the ratio by which a model is enlarged or reduced from its original dimensions. In the calculator you enter it as a percentage and the price and lead time are recalculated.

Why change the scale
There are two reasons. First, the file has the wrong units. The STL format does not carry unit information, so a model designed in inches opens 25.4 times too small in millimetres, and a model in metres opens huge. Second, you want a bigger or smaller print than the author intended, for example a figurine as a gift or a holder for a different object.
The general idea of scale is explained on Wikipedia. For 3D printing a percentage is enough: 100% is the original size, 50% is half, 200% is double.
What happens when you resize
Note that weight and time do not grow like the dimensions. At double scale the dimensions are twice as large, but the volume, and so the material used, is about eight times larger. The price therefore rises sharply when you enlarge, and falls faster than you might expect when you shrink.
- Shrinking. Thin walls and details may drop below what can be printed, see smallest feature. With a 0.4 mm nozzle, fine details simply will not print.
- Enlarging. The part has to fit in 246 × 246 × 256 mm. Anything bigger has to be split.
- Joints and holes. The clearance changes with the scale too. Better not to scale models with snap-fit joints or print in place.
Example: a part that weighs 20 g weighs about 68 g when scaled up to 150%. The price therefore rises more than it might seem. If you do not know the dimensions, open the model in a viewer and look at its size in millimetres.
How it works with us
You set the scale in the calculator after uploading. The model is prepared for printing on our server again at the new size, so the grams, the time and the number of pieces on the bed are real. You see the price and the delivery date straight away.
If your model looks like a grain of sand after uploading, it was saved in different units. You bring it back from inches with a scale of 2,540%, from centimetres with 1,000%. Always check the dimensions in the calculator before you order.
Common questions
How do I enlarge a model that is too small?
Enter the scale as a percentage in the calculator. If the model is in inches you need 2,540%, if in centimetres 1,000%.
Does the price change when I shrink a model?
Yes, and more than you would expect, because volume falls with the cube of the size. At half scale the material use is about one eighth.
Can I change just one dimension?
The scale in the calculator applies equally to the whole model. To change one dimension, do it in a model editing program before uploading.

STL
STL is the most common file format for 3D printing. It describes only the surface of a model as a mesh of triangles, with no colours, material or units.
Build volume
Build volume is the largest block that fits in a 3D printer, set by the size of the plate and the height of the Z axis. With us a single part can be at most 246 × 246 × 256 mm.
Smallest feature
The smallest feature is the smallest element that still prints cleanly in 3D printing. For FDM with a 0.4 mm nozzle it is about 0.8 mm in width and 0.2 mm in height.
Splitting a model
Splitting a model means cutting a large or complex part into several pieces that are printed separately and joined afterwards. It is used when a model does not fit on the bed or prints better in parts.
Tolerances
Tolerances in 3D printing set how far a printed dimension may differ from the model and how much clearance to leave between parts that are meant to fit together.
3D printing price
The price of 3D printing is the sum of the value of the material, printer time and the work around the order. In FDM printing, print time matters most, not the material itself.
