Stringing: where the wisps on a 3D print come from
Stringing is a 3D printing flaw where plastic leaks from the nozzle during a move between two points and forms thin wisps like a cobweb.

Why strings form
When the nozzle travels from one place to another without printing, hot, runny plastic remains in the nozzle and slowly leaks out. That is how a thin strand forms. Prusa describes it on the page about stringing and oozing.
The usual causes are a nozzle temperature that is too high, badly set retraction and damp filament, see filament moisture.
Which materials are sensitive
PETG is more prone to strings than PLA, because it flows and sticks more. That is why the window of correct settings is narrower with it. PLA makes fewer strings, but it can too.
Stringing is mainly a cosmetic flaw and does not affect the strength of a part. On fine parts, such as figurines, though, it spoils the look.
What helps
- The right nozzle temperature, not higher than needed, see nozzle temperature.
- Retraction and Z-hop: retraction pulls plastic back into the nozzle and Z-hop lifts the nozzle on a move.
- Dried filament.
- Fewer travel moves in the model. Two pillars close together make fewer strings than pillars far apart.
Strings also form because PETG is stickier than PLA and leaks from the nozzle in a way that is harder to control. In multicolour printing there are more moves between colours, and so more chances for small strings.
For your order
We leave cosmetic strings where they are, because we do not do post-processing such as finishing. On ordinary parts it is a few hairs that can be removed with a lighter or a scalpel. If appearance matters to you, add a note. We always photograph the batch before dispatch.
Common questions
Is stringing a flaw I can remove?
Yes, thin strings can be removed carefully with a lighter or a sharp knife. Take care when doing so.
Does stringing affect the price?
No.
Can stringing mean damp filament?
Yes, moisture is one of the common causes, along with temperature and retraction.
Related terms
Retraction
Retraction is a brief pull of the filament back out of the nozzle before it moves to another place. It reduces pressure in the nozzle, so no plastic leaks out during the move.
Filament moisture
Filament moisture is water the plastic absorbs from the air. When it is heated in the nozzle it turns to steam and the print is spoiled.
Nozzle temperature
Nozzle temperature is the temperature the hotend is heated to so the filament melts. It decides how fluid the plastic is, how strong the bonds between layers are and how the surface looks.
Z-hop
Z-hop is a small lift of the nozzle, a fraction of a millimetre, whenever it travels between two points on the print. It protects finished layers from scratches and helps against the nozzle catching on the part.
PETG
PETG is a tough 3D printing plastic, a close relative of the material in PET bottles. Compared with PLA it withstands more heat, impact and moisture, so it suits technical parts and outdoor use.
Filament dryer
A filament dryer is a device that warms a spool of filament to a low temperature and draws the moisture out of it, so the plastic does not form bubbles or strings or weaken during printing.
