Filament dryer: why damp filament spoils a print
A filament dryer is a device that warms a spool of filament to a low temperature and draws the moisture out of it, so the plastic does not form bubbles or strings or weaken during printing.

Why filament gets damp
Most plastics are hygroscopic, meaning they absorb water vapour from the air. PLA and PETG do so slowly, but after weeks in open air it shows. We write more about moisture under filament moisture.
When damp plastic reaches the hot nozzle, the water turns to steam and starts to spit. The result is bubbles, crackling, a matt surface, strings and, with longer exposure, lower strength.
How drying goes
A dryer is in principle a closed box with a heater and a fan. The spool is dried at a temperature below the point where it would start to deform. For PLA that is typically around 45 to 50 °C, for PETG around 60 to 65 °C, but the exact value is set by the filament maker.
It takes several hours. After drying, the spool is stored in an airtight container with silica gel, or the filament is fed from the dryer straight into the printer so that it does not get damp again.
When drying, make sure the temperature does not go above the point where the plastic starts to soften, see glass transition. A PLA spool can deform when overheated and then no longer unwinds properly.
It can be handled without a dryer too
With PLA and PETG it is often enough to keep spools in a closed bag with silica gel. A new spool from the maker usually comes in a vacuum bag. A dryer pays off if plastic sits for a long time in the open air, or with demanding materials such as nylon. We do not print those.
For your order
We look after the condition of the filament, and you do not have to do anything. We photograph every batch before dispatch. If a part arrives with a rough surface or is brittle, get in touch and we will look into it.
Common questions
Can I dry filament in an oven?
It can be done, but an oven holds a low temperature poorly, and PLA deforms when overheated. A dryer with a thermostat is safer.
How long does dried filament stay dry?
It depends on the humidity around it. Without an airtight container it can get damp within days to weeks.
Do you sell filament or dryers?
No, we do not sell filament or accessories.
Related terms
Filament moisture
Filament moisture is water the plastic absorbs from the air. When it is heated in the nozzle it turns to steam and the print is spoiled.
Filament
Filament is a thin plastic strand wound on a spool, which an FDM 3D printer melts and layers into a part. The type of plastic decides the part's strength, heat resistance and price.
PLA
PLA (polylactic acid) is the most common 3D printing material, made from plant starch. It is cheap, accurate and easy to print, but it does not withstand heat above about 60 °C or long exposure to sun.
PETG
PETG is a tough 3D printing plastic, a close relative of the material in PET bottles. Compared with PLA it withstands more heat, impact and moisture, so it suits technical parts and outdoor use.
Stringing
Stringing is a 3D printing flaw where plastic leaks from the nozzle during a move between two points and forms thin wisps like a cobweb.
Filament spool
A filament spool is a plastic or cardboard core with a strand of filament wound on it. The most common spool holds 1 kg of material.
