Warping: why a part lifts and curls during printing
Warping is a deformation of a print where corners and edges lift off the plate or the whole part bends, because plastic contracts as it cools.

Why plastic contracts
Hot plastic shrinks as it cools, which is ordinary thermal expansion. The bottom layers have already cooled, while the upper ones are still warm and pull them towards themselves. The stress is greatest in the corners, which is why they lift first.
The bigger the area, the bigger the force. An area of 200 × 200 mm is far more sensitive than a small holder. Sensitivity depends on the material as well: PLA shrinks little, PETG a bit more, and ABS or ASA a great deal, which is why they are printed in an enclosed chamber.
With PLA the shrinkage is small, so you do not need to worry about it on ordinary parts up to the size of a palm. With large flat boards, frames or long thin parts the risk is higher and worth tackling in the design.
What helps in the print
- A heated bed and good adhesion of the first layer, see adhesion.
- An enclosure, which prevents draughts and sudden cooling.
- A border around the part, a brim, which increases the contact area.
- Less fan on materials that tolerate it.
Our Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 printers are enclosed, which greatly reduces this problem with PLA and PETG. It can never be ruled out completely, though.
What you can do in the model
- Round off sharp corners on large flat parts, as a fillet reduces concentrated stress.
- Split a large flat board into smaller pieces, see splitting a model.
- Avoid long thin walls without ribs.
- Let the part lie on its largest face, as model orientation decides a lot.
For your order
We prepare the model for printing on our server, and supports are automatically included in the price. We photograph the batch before dispatch. With a large thin board, where the risk is greatest, it is better to adjust the model before uploading it, or write to us about what the part needs.
Common questions
Is warping always a printer fault?
No. It is often a combination of the shape of the model, the material and draughts. We cannot change the shape of a model, so it is best to adjust it before ordering.
Which material warps less, PLA or PETG?
PLA shrinks less, so it is usually the safer choice for large flat parts.
Can warping be fixed after printing?
A slightly deformed part can be warmed and straightened, but we do not offer that as a service and the result is uncertain.
Related terms
Poor first-layer adhesion
Poor first-layer adhesion is when the first layer of plastic does not stick well enough to the build plate, so the part comes loose or shifts during printing, or only a clump of plastic forms.
Brim
A brim is a thin flat edge of one or more layers around the base of a part, which increases the contact area with the bed and stops the part coming loose.
Enclosure
An enclosure is a cover around the build area of a 3D printer that keeps the temperature steady and protects the print from draughts. It matters for materials that shrink a lot as they cool, such as ABS and ASA.
First layer
The first layer is the first layer of plastic that the nozzle lays on the build plate. If it does not stick, the whole print fails.
Model orientation
Model orientation is the position in which a part lies on the build plate. In FDM printing it decides the strength, the surface finish, the amount of supports and the print time.
PLA
PLA (polylactic acid) is the most common 3D printing material, made from plant starch. It is cheap, accurate and easy to print, but it does not withstand heat above about 60 °C or long exposure to sun.
