DLP 3D printing: curing resin with a projector
DLP (Digital Light Processing) is a 3D printing technology where a projector shows the image of a whole layer onto liquid resin, and the resin hardens wherever it is lit.

How DLP works
The vat is filled with light-sensitive resin. A projector, in principle similar to one used for presentations, lights up a whole layer at once and the resin hardens. The plate then moves and the next layer follows. It is a method related to SLA, which draws point by point with a laser. So DLP differs mainly in how the light reaches the resin. That is why print speed does not depend on how complex a layer is.
Strengths and weaknesses
- Fine detail. Thin walls, small lettering and a smooth surface come out much better than with FDM.
- Speed. A whole layer cures at once, so layers go quickly.
- Brittleness. Standard resins are hard but brittle, and they change colour over time, especially in sunlight.
- Post-processing. Parts have to be washed in alcohol and post-cured with light, and the resin is an irritant.
- Small volume. The build area is usually smaller.
What this means for your order
We do not print DLP or any other resin process. We print with FDM in PLA and PETG. If you need something else, write to jakub.novak@boostello.com. We do not promise a print in advance, but we can advise.
For figurines with extreme detail or jewellery models, resin is the better choice. For holders, cases, spare parts and anything that has to last, PETG from FDM is often more practical, because it is tougher.
What to notice when comparing with FDM
A resin part is smooth, but it cracks under a sharp knock or when bent. An FDM part in PETG is more likely to flex than to snap. Resin parts also have to be washed and post-cured after printing, while an FDM part is finished as soon as it comes off the printer. For prototypes under mechanical load and for larger parts, FDM is therefore usually the more practical and cheaper choice.
Common questions
Is DLP better than SLA?
Neither is better or worse, they differ in how the light is delivered. DLP is usually faster when there are many parts on one plate, while SLA can be slightly smoother in fine detail.
What is the difference between DLP and MSLA?
DLP uses a projector, while MSLA uses an LED panel behind an LCD screen that works as a mask. The result is similar.
Do you print in resin?
No, we only print FDM in PLA and PETG.
Related terms
SLA
SLA is a 3D printing technology where liquid resin is cured by light layer by layer. It handles very fine detail and a smooth surface, but parts are more brittle than FDM ones.
MSLA (LCD)
MSLA is resin 3D printing where LED light passes through an LCD screen showing the image of a layer and cures the resin only where it is lit. It is also loosely called LCD printing.
Resin
Resin is a liquid photopolymer that cures under UV light. It is used in SLA, DLP and MSLA printers and gives very fine detail, but the parts are brittle.
FDM
FDM is a 3D printing technology where the printer melts plastic filament and lays it down through a nozzle layer by layer. It is the most widespread and cheapest way to 3D print.
PETG
PETG is a tough 3D printing plastic, a close relative of the material in PET bottles. Compared with PLA it withstands more heat, impact and moisture, so it suits technical parts and outdoor use.
Additive manufacturing
Additive manufacturing is the technical name for 3D printing. A part is made by adding material layer by layer from a 3D model, rather than removing it from a block.
