3D printed logo magnets: how to design them

A logo magnet is a flat object that clings to a fridge or a board by a magnet. 3D printing can make the body of a magnet in any shape, even in small runs.

These sites have thousands of free models. Download an STL or 3MF and upload it here. If you sell it or use it for business, check the model licence. How to pick a model and licence

What we print and what we do not

We print the plastic body of the magnet, for example in the shape of a logo, a town or a product. We do not supply the magnet itself, nor do we insert or glue it, we do no post-processing. You buy the magnet and glue it in yourself. Small neodymium magnets are good for a firm hold, and you can read about the principle of fridge magnets on Wikipedia.

It is also important that the magnet holds through walls. The thicker the front wall, the weaker the magnet grips the surface, so keep it thin. For a light logo magnet that is enough.

How to design the cavity for a magnet

In the back you can design a shallow round recess with a diameter 0.2 mm larger than the magnet and about as deep as the magnet is thick. The magnet is then glued into the cavity. Before a whole run, print one piece and check that it fits, this is related to tolerances.

Leave the front solid, at least 1 mm thick, so the cavity cannot be seen through it. It has to be printed with the face lying on the bed, see model orientation.

Logo, colours, details

A bold shape in one or two colours works best. For more colours send a 3MF with colours assigned, which is printed on a printer with an automatic filament changer (up to 4 colours). Colour changes add a purge tower, so it costs more, more in the entry on multicolour printing.

Details thinner than 1 mm may not be legible. The surface has visible layers of 0.2 mm.

We recommend printing a test piece with the magnet you will actually use. Cavities differ by magnet maker by tenths of a millimetre, so buy the magnets in advance and adjust the model to their real size. Choose the glue according to the material: PLA and PETG are usually bonded with two-part glue or cyanoacrylate, see gluing.

Ordering a run

Magnets suit promotional items and corporate gifts alike. You upload the model, choose PLA or PETG and the quantity, and you see the price per piece. With a small body, many pieces fit on the bed, so the price per piece falls markedly, see full bed.

Common questions

Do you supply the magnets too?

No. We print only the plastic body, you get the magnets and the glue yourself.

How thick should a magnet be?

Usually a few millimetres, depending on the thickness of the magnet. Choose the cavity so the front wall stays at least 1 mm.

Can a colour logo be printed?

Yes, from a 3MF with colours assigned, up to 4 colours.
