Klipper: what it is and why fast printers use it
Klipper is open source firmware for 3D printers that does the motion calculations on a small computer, such as a Raspberry Pi, and sends the control board only the finished motor steps.

How Klipper works
Traditional firmware such as Marlin calculates everything on a single board with a slow processor. Klipper split that up: motion planning is handled by a more powerful host computer, and the microcontroller in the printer only fires the steps of the stepper motors precisely.
The configuration is in a plain text file, and changes can be tried without flashing new firmware. The details are in the official documentation.
The difference shows most in speed. A well-tuned printer can accelerate and brake without the frame ringing, and the plastic flows evenly from the nozzle meanwhile. That is why faster printers can give comparable quality in less time, and less time means a lower price per part.
What Klipper brings
- Higher speeds and accelerations. The computer can plan movement more finely, so the printer can go faster without losing accuracy.
- Input shaping. Klipper can measure the resonances of the frame and suppress ripples behind edges, with more in the resonance compensation documentation.
- Fine tuning. Pressure advance, for example, adjusts the pressure in the nozzle so that corners are sharp and free of bumps.
That is why Klipper is popular among enthusiasts, and many modern fast printers are built on it or on something similar.
Drawbacks
Klipper needs a second device and a bit of technical skill, especially when you build your own setup. A badly written configuration can cause faults that do not exist in lighter firmware. For an ordinary user of a finished printer, the manufacturer usually takes care of this.
For your order
You do not need to care which firmware a printer uses. What matters to you is that you get an even print and a lead time based on real print time. Our Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 printers run the manufacturer's firmware, and we do not state whether it is built on Klipper, because you do not need to know. What can show up in quality is covered under ghosting.
Common questions
Is Klipper free?
Yes, it is an open source project. You only pay for the hardware it runs on.
Will Klipper speed up every printer?
No. It helps where the printer can mechanically handle higher speeds. Firmware cannot cure a weak frame or loose belts.
Do you use Klipper?
Our printers are Elegoo Centauri Carbon 2 with the manufacturer's firmware. It makes no difference to your order, as we work out the lead time and price from the real print preparation of the model.

Printer firmware
Printer firmware is a program stored directly on the printer's control board that reads G-code and turns it into motor movement, nozzle and bed heating and fan operation.
Input shaping
Input shaping adjusts a printer's motion commands so that frame vibrations cancel each other out, which gives cleaner edges even at higher speeds.
Stepper motor
A stepper motor is an electric motor that turns in small precise steps, which lets a 3D printer control head movement and filament feed without a position sensor. It normally has 200 steps per revolution.
CoreXY
CoreXY is a way of moving a 3D printer in which two fixed motors move the print head on the X and Y axes through crossed belts, while the bed moves only up and down. It is fast and stable.
Ghosting (ringing)
Ghosting is a 3D printing flaw where faint ripples, like an echo of the shape, appear behind sharp edges and corners, caused by printer vibration after a sudden change of direction.
3D printer
A 3D printer is a machine that makes a physical part from a digital model by adding material layer by layer. The most common are printers that use plastic filament (FDM).
