Delamination: why the layers of a 3D print separate
Delamination is the separation of two neighbouring layers of a 3D print that did not bond well enough during printing, so the part cracks along a layer.

Why layers fail to bond
In FDM a new layer bonds to the one below only if the lower one is still warm enough. If the plastic is too cold, the layer merely rests on it and the bond is weak. See also delamination in general.
Common causes are a low nozzle temperature, draughts and too strong a fan, damp filament, or a layer height that is too large for the nozzle diameter. That is why a part's strength is always weakest in the direction of the layers.
It shows up as a fine crack along a layer or as complete separation when bent. On decorative parts it does not matter, but on functional ones such as brackets, hooks or latches it is the main reason for failure.
The direction of the layers decides strength
A part is strong along the layers and weaker across them. When force acts perpendicular to the layers, the pull leads straight to separation. That is why the way a part lies on the plate matters, see model orientation.
A hanging hook printed standing up cracks easily, because the load pulls the layers apart. A hook printed lying down holds up far better.
How to design a strong part
- Let the loaded areas run along the layers, not across them.
- Choose 40 % strength for loaded parts, see infill and walls.
- Add a fillet to sharp transitions, where stress concentrates.
- With PETG the bonds between layers are usually better than with PLA, see PLA or PETG.
For your order
For functional parts, write in the note how they will be loaded, and choose the strong option and the material. We do not guarantee that a part will withstand a certain load, as strength depends on the shape. We photograph the batch before dispatch, but we do not measure the strength of individual parts.
Common questions
Is delamination always a printer fault?
No. It can be down to the shape of the model and the direction of the load, even when the print is fine.
Will higher infill improve strength?
Partly. The bonds between layers are affected more by temperature and orientation than by infill.
Does annealing help?
Annealing raises the strength of some materials, but we do not offer it as a service.
Related terms
Model orientation
Model orientation is the position in which a part lies on the build plate. In FDM printing it decides the strength, the surface finish, the amount of supports and the print time.
Infill
Infill is the sparse lattice that fills the inside of a part in 3D printing. It is given as a percentage, and the higher it is, the stronger, heavier and dearer the part.
Walls (perimeters)
Walls, technically perimeters, are the outline lines with which the nozzle draws the outer and inner contour of every layer. Together they form the shell of the part.
PETG
PETG is a tough 3D printing plastic, a close relative of the material in PET bottles. Compared with PLA it withstands more heat, impact and moisture, so it suits technical parts and outdoor use.
PLA vs PETG
PLA vs PETG is the most common choice in 3D printing. PLA is more accurate and enough for most things indoors, while PETG is tougher, withstands more heat and also suits outdoor use.
Annealing prints
Annealing a print means reheating the finished part to a temperature above the material's glass transition, where the polymer partly arranges itself into a crystalline structure. It is most often done with PLA so it can take a higher temperature.
